Description
This is a cluster of Indian Pipes; Monotropa uniflora, emerging from leaf litter along a small woodland stream in August. This native wildflower is a saprophyte - it lacks chlorophyll and obtains nutrients from fungi partners. I found it growing on the forest floor at Black Mountain Campground, Pisgah National Forest, North Carolina. Also known as Ghost Pipes.
