Description
I photographed this family of Limpkins in the marsh along the Hillsborough River at Lettuce Lake Park near Tampa, Florida. One chick is about to be fed, while a sibling waits in tall grass. A third sibling is hiding in the grass and is not visible in this shot. Several times a day, the parents moved the chicks to different sites, while alligators sunned a few yards away. Over a period of weeks while the chicks were growing, each site accumulated many empty snail shells.
