Description
This is an ancient panel of petroglyphs created by Native Americans of the Fremont Culture (from about 300 to 1300 Common Era). These rock art images include hunters with bow and arrows, a large bear, and many longhorn sheep. The images may have had ceremonial or religious significance and may be considered a sacred site. The images were created by pecking through the black desert varnish that coats parts of the massive sandstone cliffs overlooking the Colorado River. The Colorado River cut this canyon through the sandstone, leaving these spectacular red rock walls. This view is from Potash Road in the BLM Colorado Riverway near Moab, Utah. I shot this photograph during intermittent snow flurries following weeks of heavy snowfall.
