Description
I photographed the trailhead of the Old Mitchell Trail in August. The trail runs through Southern Appalachian spruce-fir forest of red spruce and Fraser fir. Pictured section of trail is in the dense coniferous forest just below the tree line at about 6,600 feet of elevation which is a subalpine climate zone. Mt. Mitchell is the highest peak in the Appalachian Mountains and the eastern United States. It is located within Mt. Mitchell State Park on the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina. The park is within Pisgah National Forest.
